“The biggest frustration that I have are salespeople using sales techniques trying to find the pain, trying to overcome objections, trying to probe. The old way of selling is so far dead, it’s not even funny, and when you walk into somebody’s place, they already know who you are. They already know your reputation.” -Jeffrey Gitomer
I’ve been a fan of Jeffrey’s work for almost twenty years. He is one of the top sales trainers in the world who not only had a prolific writing and speaking career, but has also been way ahead of the curve when it comes to social media. When he released the book Social Boom! How to Master Business Social Media, he was once again thinking ahead of others.
What I enjoyed most about reading his book Social Boom! was that he also enlisted several leading experts within social media to reveal simple and effective ways to make it work more effectively for any business or organization. This shows wisdom, as this topic is not only confusing to most people, but it is also changing constantly as new channels of communication within it seem to pop up every week.
Something else that has always impressed me over the years watching Jeffrey’s career blossom is how hard this man works and that he never rests on his past successes. He has a strong inner drive, discipline, and energy to keep creating, teaching, and sharing wisdom with others at a very high level. This not only shows the sign of a true pro, but is also inspiring.
Besides the book, it’s also worth noting that Gitomer has built up a very large, loyal audience of followers and book buyers over the years by providing great content on a consistent and regular basis. This also demonstrates that attracting, engaging, and connecting with people on a daily basis via the use of social media is of high importance and can no longer be ignored.
The three main things I enjoyed most about my interview with Jeffrey include:
1. He’s not only direct, but he is very real. You always know where you stand with him. What you see and hear is what you can expect.
2. Jeffrey walks the talk. Our interview was about his book Social Boom! and how to use social media more effectively. He uses it very well and is still active in the day-to-day managing of it versus delegating it all. He still has a pulse to the ground and interacts with his clients and readers.
3. Jeffrey still has the energy and drive to make things happen. He’s now sixty-eight years young and still writing, speaking, and teaching. This is not only amazing, but it shows that he truly loves what he’s doing. This is not so true for many writers who break through and attempt to coast along the rest of their careers without stepping up their game.
Two Notable Quotes from Jeffrey During Our Interview:
“So I’m pretty prolific in the area of social media because it works. It works for me and the most amazing age has just nothing to do with it. Stupidity has everything to do with it. The companies that are not involved or sticking one foot in the water or one toe in the water are stupid or they have lawyers that are even stupider.”
“The challenge that anybody has with social media is they try to go out and do what someone else has done. Stop that. Go out and document all of your own knowledge. What do you know? What does your customer know and what does your customer want to know and start to interact with them on that basis.”
